Indiana Jones and the Crystal Clear Stunt Doubles

The much anticipated fourth installment to Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones series, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, promises a lot of action. But, as Harrison Fords character clearly puts it in the trailer, "It's not as easy as it used to be." That quote may be closer to the truth during the shoot of the movie, though it's been rumored Ford had wanted to do most of the stunts, like in the old days.

In the last movie, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indy gets caught between a tank and a wall of earth, it was obvious, even with the purposely distorted face of the actor, that it wasn't Harrison Ford doing the stunt. It was in fact Vic Monroe Armstrong (left), his stunt double. As a veteran stunt coordinator, he is not famous for doubling for Timothy Dalton in the movie Flash Gordon, and as Superman in place of Christopher Reeve in Superman 2. Armstrong is also an accomplished film director.

It was said, during filming of Raiders of the Lost Ark, that Armstrong looked so much like Ford that people often confused the two. But maybe it's just the costume. There were two other stunt doubles, anyhow. But Ford was actually the one who acted in the choreographed fight scenes, claiming that there wouldn't have been much else for him to do if he "wasn't in the thick of it" during filming. Well, the story may be different for the filming of this latest Indiana Jones movie, and it's mildly hinted at with some humor about aging.

You'd expect that Armstrong would still be Ford's double (or head stunt coordinator) in the latest adventure film, but no. He had to bow out because of previous commitment to shooting The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Someone else had to play fall guy, and Dan Bradley was chosen. So, who's Dan Bradley? He's probably one of the Indiana Jones's pictured in the series of movie stills in this post (below), but we movie fans can only guess. It could be any other unnamed stunt guy. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Poster Keeps Classic Tone

Remember those adventure book covers that you used to read as a kid? Well, this poster of Indiana Jones in front of a fiery skull kind of reminds you of them. But I'd prefer it if Indiana Jones is in an action pose rather than standing straight like he's posing for a promotional photograph or displaying his costume at a premiere or during a summer holiday.

The imagery and warm tone of the poster composition do exude earthly, classic, exotic adventure. But it does make me wonder why they used that digital typeface for the subtitle. Does that give a clue to the story or is it just designer preference? The skull in the background does echo Darth Vader in the original Star Wars poster and reminds us of Ford as the no-nonsense pirate Han Solo in Star Wars. Will Harrison Ford look just as young and trim in the movie as he does in the poster? Or will he be like in the inset photo that follows?

Anyway, this picture of a younger Ford (left) is what you get when the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull poster is stripped of all its fancy trappings. But honestly speaking, Harrison Ford, or the character he plays (Indiana Jones) is a favorite icon of archaeologists. He's been an inspiration to former students out there who now have doctorates in Egyptology and other specialized archaeology sciences.

In the National Museum of the Philippines, for instance, you'd find one of his movie posters on the wall of an office, and it might still be there after all these years.
